Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo Disney Sea have finally restarted today, on 1st July 2020. The Parks were closed since 29th February, and it’s been four months! I’ve really been waiting for this day. Congratulations!
However, things aren’t quite the same as before the closure, because we have to stop the spreading of the COVID-19 coronavirus. So, what has changed? Let’s take a look.
New rules in Tokyo Disney Resort
Tokyo Disney Resort has the responsibility to protect guests and casts from the infectious disease. There are general policies and some specific measures that guests must follow in the parks. The details can also be found on the official webpage.
The general policy
Tokyo Disney Resort has taken measures following the “Guidelines for Preventing the Spread of the New Coronaviruses in Amusement Parks and Theme Parks” released from the Japan Amusement Associations. The basic policies are…
- Capacity control by limiting entrance to the parks
- The passport is available only on the homepage and limited to 15,000 a day.
- Limiting the number of guests using the attractions, shops, restaurants, etc. at the same time
- Casts are standing in front of the facilities and will guide you when you can get in.
- Regular cleaning and sanitizing of the attractions, shops, restaurants, etc
- Rules and proactive calls from casts to ensure social distance at attractions, shops, restaurants, etc
- There are markers on the ground showing where you should stand so that each guest can take social distance
Restrictions for Guests
The following rules are required to guests.
- Body temperatures checks at Park entrances
- Face masks required at all times
- However, the guideline states that you can take them off outdoors if you can take adequate distance from other guests
- Cooperation to ensure social distance
- Cooperation to wash and sanitize your hands
- Cooperation to use cashless services
How the rules are operated
I had a chance to enter Tokyo Disneyland on the first day of the reopening! In this section, I would like to report how these rules were operated in the park.

Park Entrance
Before you can reach the entrance, there is a gate where casts checks your belongings and also your temperature. A non contact thermometer is used, which measures your body temperature in less than a second.
The yellow lines are where people can stand. The lines are two meters apart and no more than 2 people (except children) can stand there. If you a group of more than two people, you have to split.
Inside the park
All the casts were wearing masks, and many were wearing rubber gloves and face shields. I was so moved by how they all waved at the guests and greeted us happily, saying, “Welcome Back!”.
There were some benches with a plate that says “Not in Service”, so that guests can take social distance.
Attractions
At every ride, guests are guided by casts to sit on every other row, to take distance with each other. Thanks to the capacity limitation, the waiting time was less than 10 minutes at almost all the attractions. I’ve never experienced Tokyo Disneyland so vacant in my life!
There are markers at the entrance of the attractions, telling you where you should stand.
There are sanitizers at the exit of each attractions.
Restaurants
The same sanitizers are placed at the entrance of the restraunts.
Casts will guide guests to tables, but half of the tables are left unoccupied so that we can take social distance.
Entertainment
All of the shows and parades that were played before the closure are canceled. However, there is a short greeting show, performed in front of the Cindellera castle. I was so happy to be able to meet Mickey and Minnie again!
Summary
I was a little worried that I might be infected with the coronavirus by going to Disneyland. However, there was no need to worry. With all these countermeasures, I was comfortable that there is no chance I will catch the disease. It is incredible how they minimize the infection threat, with minimum requirements to guests. Yes, we had to put on masks, but every request except that was nothing annoying. It was rather comfortable to be able to take social distance with other guests. We had a great time because the waiting time for all the attractions was so short. I was impressed with how the casts care for everybody’s health, but at the same time, not forgetting to give us dreams, and making our stay in the park a memorable time.
