The popularity of “Frozen” continues unabated, but this year a new version of “Beauty and the Beast” will be staged by the Shiki Theatre Company.
In this article, I will share about “Beauty and the Beast” that the Shiki Theatre Company will be performing this fall.
What is the Shiki Theater Company?
The Shiki Theater Company is one of Japan’s leading commercial theater companies.
The company has about 1,400 members and performs approximately 3,500 shows a year.
Shiki has theaters throughout Japan and performs a wide range of repertoire.
Last year they presented “Frozen,” and among their Disney productions, “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” have also been very successful.
And this fall, the Shiki Theatre Company will open “Beauty and the Beast.
The Shiki Theatre Company’s “Beauty and the Beast”
The Shiki Theatre Company presents a new “Beauty and the Beast” production.
- First day of performance: October 23-
The performance will start in October, and a long run has already been scheduled.
Maihama Amphitheater
“Beauty and the Beast” will be performed at the Maihama Amphitheater, not at a theater owned by Shiki.
Maihama Amphitheater is a multipurpose hall located halfway between Tokyo Disneyland and Sea.
The facility is owned by Oriental Land Co. which operates Tokyo Disney Resort.
The Maihama Amphitheater once hosted Cirque du Soleil’s “ZED.”
Different from Shiki’s usual theaters, the Amphitheater has a semi-circular stage.
Therefore, it seems that a new production was needed to match the shape of the stage.
The cast of “Beauty and the Beast”
A rehearsal video was recently released on the official youtube!
Belle’s singing voice was beautiful.
Mariko Gosho is the actress who played Belle in the previous “Beauty and the Beast” as well.
No official announcement of performers will be made at the time of ticket sales.
Once the performance begins, the scheduled performers will be announced on the official website every Monday morning at 10:00 am.
This is only a schedule and is subject to change.
Tickets for “Beauty and the Beast”
Tickets for “Beauty and the Beast” by the Shiki Theatre Company will be sold on different schedules depending on when the show is performed.
- All seats are sold by lottery
- Up to 2 tickets per person
I also tried the lottery on the first day of the show, but it was not successful.
- Rows 1 to 9 of S1 seats will be sold by lottery (maximum of 4 tickets per application)
- Members can make advance reservations from May 28
- General sales from June 4
It may settle down next year, but it will be tough to find front seats in the general quota during the year.
Seating at Maihama Amphitheater
The Maihama Amphitheater was originally a circus theater-like Cirque du Soleil, so the seating arrangement is slightly different from that of a theater for plays.
The semi-circular stage partly protrudes into the audience.
Blocks B through D, rows 9 or less, will be closer to the stage and will allow for a closer look at the actors.
“Beauty and the Beast” is going to have a lot of stage equipment.
If you are in the front B, C, or D blocks, you will most likely be able to see the entire stage from any seat.
In the rear blocks H, I, and J, it is easier to see the stage if you are within the 17th row.
In any case, the facility was originally used to perform circuses, so the stage should be easily visible from all seats.
Musical “Beauty and the Beast” Goods
The Shiki Theatre Company sells merchandise in conjunction with its performances.
At this stage, there is no information on goods for “Beauty and the Beast,” but as soon as I get them, I will report them on this blog.
During the previous “Beauty and the Beast” musical, a variety of items were released.
Some were available online and some were goods that could only be purchased at the theater.
We can expect Tokyo Disneyland to add additional merchandise to accompany the musical.
